c5 is a move which is thematic in the French defence. White can obtain a lost position with astonishing speed if he is does not play accurately. (I am speaking from experience.)
White's main choices are
- 7.Bb5In my opinion this move has now been refuted.
- 7.Rb1White endeavours to avoid the crucial lines in the 7.Bb5 variation. Take a look at the improvement played against me in an Email game.
- 7.Bf4An old move which is well worth considering.
- 7.Qd2Opinions on this move differ greatly.
- 7.Nh3Matteo Viola has been playing this move a great deal. Without knowing this I played the move against him as white. I lost a very interesting game. Note the improvement found by Winckelmann.
