rest of the pack at the top of the 2008 Club Championship.
Tony leads by a point from Brian and Mick Dyett has made it back to 3rd place
a further 8 points back.
Althought there are 6 competition nights still to play the first 3 plus 4th

Rachel Cathcart is now 5 points up on Stephen Disney in the Junior section.
Winners in Week 14 were Chris Newcombe, Greg Hern, Tony Walker and Brian Ramsey.
Congratulations again go to Virginia Jones on her Semi Final

The new boards obtained from the Games Shop at Charlestown Mall
have had a generally favourable response. We got the boards 20% off the price
for buying in bulk, so have a look at the Games Shop when looking for a new
board.
Just a reminder that Backgammon Club fees are now overdue and that only financial
members can take up their positions in the Captain's, President's and Top
8 Trophies . Financial club members are also eligible for special prizes at
the Newcastle Open.
The 2008 Newcastle Open will be held over 2 days, Saturday and
Sunday, August 23 and 24 at Kotara Bowling Club, Howell St, Kotara.
The first day will be a Swiss tournament qualifier in to the Day 2 finals.
All players will have a full day of backgammon on day 1 and
every player will qualify for a final on day 2. A Junior Open
has not been organized for this year as at the time of the tournament we will
only have 1 Junior that would qualify under the age restriction (Stephen D).
Full details of the tournament can be found by following this
link.

General news

In Queensland, we have a new club playing in Brisbane.
Mick Konneman and Rocky Henry run the club which meets on the
Second Tuesday of the month at the Hotel Broadway, 93 Logan Rd

While backgammon flourishes in some parts of Australia, it
declines in others. Sadly, there is now no regular tournament
backgammon to be played in Sydney. The Sydney Backgammon
website will evolve into the Australian Backgammon website over
the coming months. This is a great opportunity for you to
provide input as to what you would like to see from this
website. Let me know your thoughts.
-------------------
Upcoming events:
-------------------
18/19 Oct 08 - The 2008 East Coast Movers and Shakers tournament
will again be held at the Bangalow Bowling Club at Byron Bay.
More details soon.
-------------------
23/24 Aug 08 - The 25th Newcastle Open will be a two day event
held on Saturday and Sunday August 23 and 24 at the Kotara Bowling
Club, Howell St, Kotara. Details from the Newcastle Backgammon Club:

AGM News
The 2008 AGM of Newcastle Backgammon Club was held at Alder
Park Bowling Club on January 18th. The following committee was elected:
2008 NBC COMMITTEE:
President - Robert Disney
Secretary - Virginia Jones
Treasurer - Greg Hern
Captain - Tony Walker
Vice Captain - Bruce Parr
All Membership fees ($10 snr, $2 jnr), nightly playing fees ($5 snr, $3 jnr) and prize monies ($7 per round robin per night) remain the same as last year.
The Treasurer's Report showed a profit on the year of $128.16. A full accounting was not possible at the time of the meeting because of a computer crash but a more detailed report will be forwarded if information can be recovered.
The 2 points for paying but not playing that had come back into Championship calculations the last couple of years has been abolished.
Reimbursements to the President and Captain for the trophies associated with the knockout nights raised from $25 to $30. The winners of the respective events will be given the option of receiving a trophy at the end of year Presentation Night or having cash added to the value of the tournament.
It was also decided that to be eligible to play in the Captain's and President's Trophy competitions that players must be financial Club Members and have played at least 1 previous club night.
Proposals to change the composition of the Club Championship by either counting only the Best 18 results of the year or changing the points scored per round robin to 8-5-3-3 either lapsed or were defeated.
For many years the club has issued a newsletter called The Blotter
on an "as needed" basis. With the advent of the website, a natural
progression for issuing information is the development of this page.
All the latest information regarding club activities, including finals, tournaments,
visits etc will be posted here on a fortnightly basis.
Club members are welcome to
submit items of interest (both related and non-related to Backgammon)
so as there is always something new to view! Other club Tournament organizers
may also submit information which may be of interest to our members.
