"Exploring the Heavens" is a five week course for the backyard astronomer. The course gives you the skills to recognise some of the prominent constellations, locate the planets and understand the seasonal variations of the night sky. With the aid of 3D rendering, planetary and stellar astronomy is made exciting and understandable. Below is an outline of this five week course. Note that this course will run for 6 weeks because the last week in February I will not be available.
History of Astronomy -
From 1000BC to the advent of Einstein's relativity an evening of astronomical discoveries.
Emphasis is given to our changing view of our place in the universe.
The Constellations -
Identify constellations and the zodiac signs.
Understand how the sky moves.
Learn the theory and practice of finding planets in the night sky.
The Solar System -
A tour of the planets, asteroids and comets.
Planetary exploration has produced some amazing discoveries over the last decade.
This is an evening of many fantastic facts & images.
The Stars -
What are the stars and how are they formed, live and die?
These questions will be answered while you come face to face with a red giant and a black hole.
Telescopes -
How a telescope works and the many different types will be explained.
The rest of the evening will be used looking through telescopes and discussing the larger cosmos.
