Strange Bedfellows: Rev. Charles Stewart, Brisbane’s First Baptist Minister and the United Evangelical Church

(Research Paper) by David Parker (1998) 80pp ISBN 0-9586622-6-6 $12+ $2.20 post

The story of a Scottish Baptist minister recruited by Dr John Dunmore Lang to be chaplain on the Fortitude when it brought
the first group of Lang immigrants to Moreton Bay in 1849 and then went on to pioneer a united church composed of Baptists, Presbyterians and Congregationalists. It reveals the background to Lang's bold plans and the tragic life of his recruit who laid the foundation for the later successful development of the three participating denominations. Much of the information in this detailed account has never been published before, and is the result of extensive research by the author, with the assistance of people in various parts of Australia and in UK.

Thomas and William Deacon: General Baptists in Queensland

David Parker (Research Paper) (1998) 28pp ISBN 0-9586622-7-4 $3.50 posted

William Deacon, a student during the mid-1840s for the General Baptist ministry at the college in Leicester, took ill during an
interim pastorate at the end of his first year of study. Not being able to fulfil his calling and seeking a warmer climate, he joined Dr John Dunmore Lang's first immigrant ship, the Fortitude, when it sailed to Moreton Bay in Sept 1848. His health improved for some time so he and his wife, Louisa (nee Shenton) encouraged both their families to make the journey to join them
in Ipswich, Queensland. William's widowed father, Rev. Thomas Deacon, assistant minister at Bourne Baptist Church, his niece and several of the Shentons settled successfully from 1851. However, William died later that year; Louisa remarried
but both she and her new husband, Samuel Southerden also died. Thomas was pastor of the United Congregational Church in Ipswich 1853-54, and then of the Ipswich Baptist Church when it was formed in 1860, but he too died later that year after the chapel which he so generously provided for was opened. His grandson, Lt Col William Thomas Deacon, CB, a veteran of the South Africa War, was the first native born mayor of Ipswich. Louisa's brother, Samuel was also a mayor. Read the full story of this family.
