Night of the Notables espaliered as an
educational programme
AIM
- Students will cognitively and emotionally identify with their
chosen notable.
- Students will recognise and enjoy greater self esteem about
their own gifts and talents.
OBJECTIVES
- Identify success and fame from many perspectives.
- Identify that persistence, luck and opportunity contribute to
success.
- Recognise that talent development and achievements in the less
well known are equally valuable and necessary in life.
- Learn and practise research skills; use eminence theme to sift
material.
- Communicate effectively to adults who do not already know
about the Notable.
- Present a major perspective on the Notable in display and
'role play'.
ACTIVITIES
- After research and family discussion, select a notable to
study
- Thoroughly research the life and achievements of the
notable
- Deliver an in-progress talk to the class on the notable.
- Communicate with guests at the Night about the interests and
achievements of the Notable.
- Take on the role of that notable in the school at the Night
for one hour.
EVALUATION
- Complete the tasks and course: the choice, the talk and
perform on the Night.
- Comprehensive research and knowledgeable communication about
the Notable
- Active participation on the Night with full display,
conversation and role playing.
- Production of artifacts representative of the achievements of
the chosen Notable.
- Identification with the Notable as an aid to motivation, and
affective affirmation of one's own gifts and talents.
RESOURCES
- Print and non-print materials as many as can be obtained:
biographies, news items, diaries, photographs, public records,
maps, charts, art works, encyclopaedia entries, faxes, personal
communication, artifacts, memorabilia.
- Active inquiries and interviews with people who know or knew
the Notable.
- Evaluative critiques about fame, success and individual talent
development.
- Family support and inputs.
