What is a GEDCOM?
A GEDCOM file is a text file which has a fairly standard
layout. It contains information about a family tree, e.g. Names, dates
(birth/marriage/death), notes, relationships etc. The file can be
"imported" into most family tree programs, so that you can see
a family tree represented graphically, with each generation connected to
the next, this is called a "pedigree" view. You can trace,
sometimes on the same page, individuals through to their parents,
grandparents etc.
What do I need to be able to
see the GEDCOM?
You will need to have a family tree program installed on
your computer capable of importing the GEDCOM file. Several of these are
listed below, with links to the sites where they can be downloaded to
your computer. All of these programs are "free", however they
will have some features disabled, or may display advertisements.
Generally the full versions are available for a small US$ fee. The
respective sites will tell you more about this. In preparing the family
tree for this web page, I have used the Ancestry program.
You will also need to download the GEDCOM file from this
page, save it to your hard disk, and then import it into your family
tree software.
Family Tree Software
GenoPro is excellent
for displaying family trees in a "christmas tree" style. Is
easy to use, but doesn't have some of the advanced features. Download
GenoPro here
Ancestry Family Tree
is a more advanced program, with advanced features. Recommended for
advanced users. It is available free from Ancestry.com. Download
Ancestry Family Tree here
Legacy Family Tree
is again a fairly advanced program with some of the features available
when you upgrade to the deluxe version. Download
