God is nameless, unfathomable, incomprehensible, beyond all possible imaginings. Though silent and seemingly distant, God is nonetheless near. God can be encountered, experienced and known in a way that can neither be mistaken nor confounded. The Word of God is "very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart for you to observe" [Deuteronomy 30].
Ignatius Loyola, through his Spiritual Exercises, offered us a way to meet God here and now, to be aware of His freedom in our lives and to know better what He asks of us. Such freedom will enable us to find the lost, to heal the broken, to feed the hungry, to release the prisoners, to rebuild the nations, to bring peace among people and to make music in the heart. Through the Spiritual Exercises, we can know more clearly the mission given to us by God and find strength to put it into practice.
During 2006, The Australian Jesuits celebrate 450 years since the death of their founder, Ignatius Loyola, and 500 years since the birth of his first two companions Francis Xavier [Patron of Australia] and Pierre Favre. Through a variety of programs at the Centres of Ignatian Spirituality around Australia, the Australian Jesuits share with you the precious path to God bequeathed to us by Ignatius and his first companions.
