Don't blame migrants

Julie Peters

People who blame Asians, Wogs and Poms for high unemployment are wrong!

Labor under Keating successfully kept wage inflation under control by keeping unemployment high (it's in the economics text books) and so do the Liberals; But Immigration does not cause unemployment although it may make it worse in the short term. What causes unemployment is an economic policy that is obsessed with a surplus budget; government policy that taxes the poor more than the rich; a state government that closes schools and hospitals and gives us casinos and Grand Prix's. (Gambling is robbing from the poor to make the rich richer). Unemployment is also created by governments selling our family silver, Qantas, the SEC, the Commonwealth Bank and Telstra. This puts thousands and thousands out of work.

Both the Liberals and Labor think it's more important to suck up the rich rather than to run a fair country. We need to create more jobs, re-skill the unemployed, increase education levels and health care and we could even reduce working hours to share the jobs around.

We do have the right to control our immigration; but let's not decide based on ill-informed prejudice; let's decide immigration policy based on who we need, how many the environment can support and how well and how quickly they can be integrated into our society. And we could also be little generous and allow family reunion and some genuine refugees such as the East Timorese left homeless after the Indonesian invasion.
