-- My lil' dwagon©, a work in progress --

Welcome to my latest, and greatest creation, my lil' dwagon. It is currently a work in progress, having taken a few hundred hours already. A lot of the time has been spent devising ways of doing things, and meticulously sowing the wadding/padding to the outside of the beast.

This page serves as a work in progress page, showing images of the dwagon at various times throughout it's development.

The basis of the dwagon was formed on a few large peices of foam. I carved it up exactly like I did for my costumes. There was over $150 AUD foam used to make the beasty. On carving there was a heap of wastage, part of it was used for the Tigger costume filling. There were at the start intentions of using servo's or stepper motors to give the dwagon movement. This idea was throw out, and I went for the option of making him/her a peice of furnature. The eye is probably the single most striking thing of the dwagon. Made of a perspecs half sphere, which I filled with plaster ... then ripped out the plaster, then airbrushed then reinserted... I got the eyes for the

A structure was made, of 2 cm or 3/8 " tubing. Basically the structure could be inserted inside the foam to give some solidarity to the creature ( you can see the structure in a few of the images below ). With the structure in place I could make the dwagon stand up on it's own four feet! After it was made to stand up, I went about putting wadding on it and smoothing it out. So in the end we have the dwagon how it is now.

Lately the things I've tried to find a decent way of covering the beast... this has led to a few unsuccessful tries. Finally I'm going for individual scales, this process will start by the time you are reading this! Previous tries have been:
coloured velvet - I tried this with limited success.. basically I used the correct coloured fabrics and joined them together. If you couldn't already guess based on the size and style of the beast this is hard... especially to get sharp lines.
plain velvet - the intention was to airbrush this instead of joining different fabrics where colours changed. Again this is difficult as making a decent pattern and joining it perfectly is uhmm difficult to do! To get seams joining perfectly was very hard. Secondly it took me ages to make the pattern (over 400 pins were used to hold it the pattern in place.. liberally spread )Sooo....

  • scales - this will be time consuming but will be the only way to get a satisfactory finish. So here goes!...
