The Health, Stamina & Magic bars are the key to the entire game.
If you can keep these 3 values high you have WON.
The Yellow (Stamina) bar is easy - resting brings it up quickly. Even where you get jumped by Monsters a lot while resting, you can do "micro-rests" (Rest, wait a few seconds, press ESC, Save game, repeat) to bring it back up. (Note the Swim Around The World exploit to recover Stamina while swimming).
The Blue (Magic) bar is tougher. It can take ages to recover, especially if it's a long way down and you're doing "micro-rests" for safety. It's handy to have a nearby Magic Fountain to visit between battles, and this is sometimes possible, but apart from the Starter Dungeon just outside New City, you generally don't get access to one until you've already cleaned out the area, and it's then mainly useful to recover Magic Points used to Identify the Items you've picked up along the way. You need a Portable Magic Fountain, and you will be interested to discover that this is possible, using MANAFOOD items and the RECHARGE spell. (For details note the section Infinite Magic).
The Red (Health) bar is very tricky. If you Rest for long enough, Health points will return to your characters, but you could spend several days waiting for them to return. Of course, you can cast HEAL WOUNDS or HEALTHFULL magic, but even with the Infinite Magic trick (as above) you will find that your MANAFOOD items will discharge inconveniently fast. You could carry around lots of HV.HEALING potions, but these take up slots and cost Gold. The answer is to have Weapons, Armor or Artifacts that have the REGEN+1 (or even REGEN+2) attribute and equip them. Then when you rest, the Health points return about as fast as Stamina points. (See the section on Regen+ Items for details of where to get such things).

Every character should get Ninjitsu at some time. A good way is to start your characters off as classes that get it as a Physical Skill, then spend at least 1 point on it before changing class (if necessary). This is because this skill allows a character to Hide in shadows. Hidden characters cannot be seen or attacked by lower level monsters at all, and only by higher level monsters if aroused to respond (E.G: the Beast of 1000 Eyes).
You can cast Magic while hidden, play Music, use Artifacts or just Parry/Rest to regain lost Stamina. This will allow you to take on battles that would otherwise be too difficult. Oh, and if they don't all Hide on the 1st round of combat, keep trying! This is a self improving skill, which means that each success gives you a chance for it to increase automatically.
Many skills, like Ninjitsu, are self improving. That is, the more you do them, the better they get. You may have noticed that Oratory, Music and Weapons skills improve with experience. It doesn't matter whether you're killing Boring Beetles or Black Dragons, the improvement is the same, which is a clue: it's much easier to survive Beetles, so follow this procedure:
(It ain't exciting, but by Satan's Left Nut, it's damned effective. I find that a few hours of this reduces me to a zombie, so I use an Insane friend to do it for me - a recommended technique!)
Don't throw out or sell those Sparkle Stix that you just found! Get some of this low level rubbish for each and every character, then head for the starter dungeon and practice like crazy (or grab an Insane friend ;-).
Sooner or later one of your characters will get the spell RECHARGE. By this time you should have collected a bunch of Artifacts that have a few spells in them. How would you like an infinite supply of (say) level 5 Fireball spells, that don't cost you any Magic points to use? Here's how it's done:
Every so often, the word *FAILURE* flashes up, and the Artifact disappears! Just reload the game and try again. If it keeps happening, rest your characters to get over the "bad" random numbers, then try again.
Every so often you'll come across an artifact with a juicy spell, but when you try to recharge it, it says *FAILURE*, the Artifact doesn't disappear, and no extra charges can be added. Tough. Live with it.
There are 3 artifacts that have a unique spell in them called MANAFOOD. When you USE one of these artifacts, the character gains a bunch of spell points. Yes, these artifacts can also be RECHARGEd!!!
The BOTTLE of OLD JAKE'S casts level 4 MANAFOOD, and the MILK of MAGMANASIA and MANA STONE both cast it at level 6.
This means that you can tour from Fountain to Fountain, using all the regular Magic that you want, and even when you can't sleep to regain Magic points, you can get them back from these Artifacts, and RECHARGE them at each Fountain that gives back at least Magic points.
(Note that the GOLDEN APPLES have level 1, and MOSER'S MOJO TEA has level 2 MANAFOOD, but these are low level and not RECHARGEable.)
Want to speed up those battles? Kill Monsters 6 times faster? The EQUIP bug can help!
Suppose that your entire party has Hidden, you've cast multiple Firestorm, Acid Bomb, Poison Gas and so on, which last for multiple rounds, doing damage each time. Usually you then have to patiently Parry/Rest while the Magic destroys the Monsters. Instead of Parry/Rest, click on EQUIP for every character, then start the fight. 6 times a character is called up to change its equipment, and each time you just click EXIT.
Now here's the good bit: For some unknown reason, the game in some sense re-initialises the combat turn, and ALL of these Magic spells go off again after every EXIT from the Equip. (Ooh, that's gotta hurt!)
This also works in Wizardry VI, Bane of the Cosmic Forge!
(Note that the effect can be somewhat erratic, due to the uncertainty of the order in which characters act.)
Who needs a boat? Just start swimming until you meet dinner - oops, I mean Monsters. If you start getting low on Stamina and no Monsters have turned up, spin around on on the spot by holding down the Left (or Right) Arrow key until Monsters appear.
Hide in the shadows. Then Parry/Rest for multiple combat rounds, and watch your Stamina climb back up to the top. Then use the Equip bug to kill the Monsters, and do the whole thing again. And again. And again.
I know that this idea sounds silly, but in some of the Caves it's the only way to get about, especially the Giant Caves, where there's a nice random Chest in a far alcove, that has decent Armor, and (if you open it repeatedly) a good chance of picking up a Vulcan Hammer! Even in the Dragon Caves, after the Cave-Ins you can easily end up too far from your Boat to swim back unassisted.
(If you seriously consider swimming around the World this way, and you're not a Chartered Accountant, I urge you to seek Professional Counselling)
Sometimes you're just not ready to go to Rattkin Ruins, Ukpyr or very much of Nyctalinth, so you'd like to go to the Dane Tower, but the road past Nyctalinth is too dangerous and you can't save Jan-Ette from the T'Rang Assassins.
If you try the short way through the WILD ORCHIDS, your party begins to fall asleep. No problem, just try this:
Every so often everyone will fall asleep, and although the Monsters will wake you up, they'll do too much damage. Just QUIT and RELOAD and try again. The section of road affected like this is fairly short, so it's not too tedious.
The following REGEN+1 items will import as noted:
(note that the other items that ALWAYS import are Ring of Stars, Amulet of Life, PK Crystal, Silver Cross, Ankh of Life, Poet's Lute, Angel's Tongue, all Potions, Rod of Sprites, Sparkle Stix, Icicle Stix and similar; but the "Super Items" like the Spear of Death, Muramasa Blade, Maenad's Lance, Elven Bow and Hayai Bo must be the ONLY item equipped to guarantee their import.)
The Land of Dreams puzzle will give you a choice of 5 good items, 2 of which have REGEN+ when equipped:
Gown of Divine Mail, Upper & Lower - This is TWO pieces of armor, BOTH of which are REGEN+1 , AC -10 and CURSED. They can each be worn by a character who is a Fighter, Priest, Ranger, Valkyrie, Bishop, Lord or Samurai, of any Gender or Race.
Amulet of Healing - Although only a single item, it is REGEN+2, AC -4, CURSED and EVERYONE can equip it.
(It is moot which choice is better; the Divine Mail protects 2 characters, but only half the professions can wear it, and the Amulet of Healing can be given to a character using a good weapon with REGEN-1, and still get an overall REGEN+1 effect.)
When you step into the 3rd room, the chest that lies directly ahead (East) of you is a Random Item chest, and re-opening the chest multiple times can give a Faerie Cap, REGEN+1, AC -4.
The chest on this level that contains the Chrome Key often has the Faerie Cap, REGEN+1, AC -4.
There are a number of chests here, particularly the "Dragon Hoard", that will repay the effort of opening them repeatedly to get the best items.
The Elven Bow and the Maenad's Lance are often available here.
(There are many very good Armor items too, such as the Mantis Gloves and Mantis Boots which are AC -14 for the Fighter, Valkyrie and Lord professions, even though not REGEN+ items.)
This NPC has an interesting list of goods:
Ring Pro Frost
Amulet of Spiders|
Amulet of Stillness
Amulet of Illusions
Ankh of Might
Ankh of Youth
Ankh of Speed|
Ankh of Dexterity
Ankh of Sanctity
Ankh of Healing
Cloak of Fortune
Note in particular:
The Ankh of Healing is AC -1, REGEN+1 and EVERYONE can equip it. Since you can visit her many times, get here and your REGEN+ worries are over.
The PK Crystal is AC -4, REGEN+1, PSIONIC 50% for a Psionic.
If this seems too expensive, try our GET RICH QUICK scheme.
There are 6 Gorrors, who vary from the trivial (Ra-Sep-Re-Tep), to the near-impossible to beat, but the chests are all the same in what they give you, which is a mixture of great, good, and crappy gear.
You will get 4-7 items each time you open a chest, so Save the Game, Open the Chest, Assay the Items, Identify those Items that need it, then decide whether to keep them, or discard the Game, reLoad it, and try again. (see SHOP 'TIL YOU DROP)

If you want to beat up the FIEND OF NINE WORLDS, hide in the shadows, chuck a lot of cloud-effect spells, and use the EQUIP bug to kill him.
The BEAST OF 1000 EYES is harder, but it will help enormously if everyone is Equipped with a Bat Necklace, which has 50% resistance to Light, as the BEAST only has one spell, DAZZLING LIGHTS, although at a very high level; Hide in the shadows, cast ANTI-MAGIC, SLOW and WEAKEN until you run out of Magic points, then throw all the destructive magic at your command, then summon a helper with Create Life/Illusion/Conjuration, then attack from the shadows, and you'll Slice'n'Dice the sucker. Slowly. Not for the impatient.
Note that much of the Weapons and Armor are available elsewhere, except perhaps the Ebony Plate Mail & Heaume and it can't hurt to get hold of the excellent secondary Weapon PANDORA'S WAND (for a Mage, Bard, Psionic, Bishop, Samurai or Monk; all Races and Genders)
You get a lot of good items here, but the only REGEN+ item that I know is there for sure is the Coif of Divine Mail, AC -8, REGEN+1 and CURSED. It completes the set of Divine Mail armor, and of course can only be worn by a character who is a Fighter, Priest, Ranger, Valkyrie, Bishop, Lord or Samurai, of any Gender or Race.
You can get by without the FIREARMS skill, but it's easy to get at Ukpyr, and it can be handy for one or more of your back-rankers to have a secondary weapon that they can use from the back rank.
The Firearms available are:
|1.|| ||Musket, Equip: Primary/Secondary, Damage: 1-10, Special: KIA, for a Fighter, Thief, Ranger, Valkyrie, Lord or Samurai. You are required to buy 2 of these to solve the Ukpyr puzzle. Uses POWDER & SHOT|
|2.|| ||Blunder Buss, Equip: Primary, Damage: 2-10, Special: KIA, for a Fighter, Ranger, Valkyrie or Lord. Not required, but slightly more damage than a Musket. Uses POWDER & SHOT|
|3.|| ||Cobaltine Power Glove, Equip: Primary/Secondary, Damage: 8-14, Attack: +2, Special: PLYZE KIA, for ANYONE. One of the 4 weapon choices in THE HALL OF PRESERVATION, City of Sky. Uses POWER PACKs|
|4.||2 Frontier Phasers, Equip: Primary/Secondary, Damage: 3-10, Special: KIA, for Fighter, Thief, Ranger, Valkyrie, Lord or Samurai. Another of the 4 weapon choices in THE HALL OF PRESERVATION, City of Sky. Uses POWER PACKs|
(Note that you can use the Diamond Ring (from Bane) in the HALL OF PRESERVATION to get the other 3 items, so you can have your *LIGHT SWORD* as well!)
With all the items in the HALL OF PRESERVATION available, you should have plenty to think about how to mix'n'match the weapons, and the only question becomes: "How do I get 100% FIREARMS skill easily?"
The answer is to EQUIP the Mystery Ray in front of a fountain, spin around on the spot until Monsters arrive, then shoot them. Yes, FIREARMS is a Self Improving Skill! Because you get the Mystery Ray very early in the game (at Nyctalinth) you should be 100% soon after you finish Ukpyr, long before the City of Sky. The Mystery Ray does little or no damage and can be equipped by ANYONE, which makes it ideal as a training weapon.
This is so easy it's almost embarrassing.
Find, Buy or Steal as many RECHARGEable objects as you can, such as the Ring of Resounding and use the ARTIFACTS trick to boost the number of charges they hold.
Then sell them (Paluke in New City gives the best prices).
Repeat as needed. That's all there is to it. Now your money worries go away.
When you come upon a chest, SAVE THE GAME BEFORE OPENING IT!
This has several beneficial effects:
Note the example in the REGEN+ ITEMS section, relating to the Gorrors chests - a dedicated maniac opened these chests dozens of times to figure out the items available there.
Not every chest will have good items, but a few openings will quickly tell you what level of items, and what types, are available there.
If a particular opening gives one good item, but you still want to check for others, Save the game as "chest1" or similar, then try again - you may end up with several saved games, and you can then just select which one to go with.
Any errors of fact or omissions are entirely mine own, and I would appreciate an EMAIL if you discover such. New discoveries will be acknowledged by Name and/or Link as desired.
