Linda Carroli - Bio
A cultural writer, editor, researcher and consultant based in Brisbane, Australia. I am currently undertaking postgraduate studies in urban planning and design.
Writing & Publishing
I have written non-fiction as a journalist, essayist and critical writer. I have worked on and managed many academic, media and community research projects and has worked in digital, print and broadcast media.
I received a project grant from the Visual Arts and Craft Board (Australia Council) to research and produce a series of writings exploring the intersection of text and image in contemporary visual art (follow the Wordings link for work in progress) which includes the weblog, artArt.
As a freelance editor, my editorial experience includes serving on the Queensland Editorial Committee and the Hypertext Advisory Committee of Real Time and Eyeline. I have guest edited a special double issue of the prestigious Leonardo Electronic Almanac themed ‘textuality, virtuality, technology’ in 2002 and contributed a monthly column about online writing resources for the Queensland Writers Centre magazine, Writing Queensland between 2000 and 2005. I was an Editor of fineArt forum, a science, art and technology electronic magazine, 2001 until 2004 and edited The Ideas Book for the Ideas Festival and Brisbane City Council, published by UQP, February 2005.
My writings have also been published in Leonardo, Eyeline, Periphery, Real Time, Meanjin, Broadsheet, Globe E, Xtexts, Art Asia Pacific, M/C Journal, Electronic Book Review, fineArt forum, Photofile, Metro Magazine and Artlink, as well as in a number of professional publications, anthologies and artist monographs. I have written catalogue and critical essays which have been published nationally and internationally.
My writings have been presented/published as part of the New York Digital Salon (NY, USA), ISEA (Canada), Sarai Reader #03: Shaping Technologies and Sarai Reader #06: Turbulence (India), Straight Out of Brisbane (Bris, AU) and Mediatopia (LA, USA).
Consulting & Research
I have undertaken several consultancies and project management roles independently and in partnership with JM John Armstrong under the umbrella of our microbusiness. These contracts have involved research and report writing, strategic planning, project management, publishing and online service delivery. Clients have included: artsynconline.com, IT Partnership Project, BEMAC, Princess Alexandra Hospital, Outback Arts, Feral Arts, Arts Queensland and Ideas at the Powerhouse.
In 2006, Armstrong and I completed a research consultancy for the Queensland government examining funding for Indigenous Art Centres in Queensland. Prior to this I was working with Feral Arts undertaking market research for their software commercialisation project. I also worked on the Collections Sector Needs Scoping Study while working with Museum & Gallery Services Queensland and, with JM John Armstrong, am a public art consultant for Maroochy Shire Council.
Creative Work
I have developed and maintain an electronic writing practice. In 1997, I completed a Writer's Residency as part of the Australian Network for Art and Technology project, *Water Writes Always in *Plural, working collaboratively online with Josephine Wilson to produce a hypertext for the World Wide Web. This work was awarded the inaugural Salt Hill Award for Hypertext (University of Syracuse, NY) in 1998 and received a Honourable Mention in the trAce/AltX International Hypertext Competition. In 1998, I participated in Ensemble Logic, a series of online lectures and forums organised by the Electronic Writing Research Ensemble and received a project grant in 1998 from the Australia Council's New Media Fund to continue my collaboration with Josephine Wilson on our new work, cipher. In 1999, I received a Digital Media Program - Innovative Project Grant from Arts Queensland to produce speak: a hypertext essay which was presented as part of the INK.ubation Salon in conjunction with the trAce conference, Incubation in 2000 and MAAP99. In 2001, she received a Product Development Grant from Arts Queensland to commence research a new work, racconto. Work on racconto is ongoing.
Several of my works are required or suggested reading in over 20 university courses in the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia. I have also been a ‘virtual guest’ in numerous online forums and seminars including those hosted by Electronic Literature Organisation (USA), ISEA (Canada) and trAce Online Writing Centre (UK).
