Gwen Smalley has written a book on George and Emma (her great
grandparents). It is 44 pages. covering their emigration to
Ballarat in 1854, their establishment of
the Hope Bakery at the corner of Seymour and Neil Streets and their
selection of land at Boort, northeast of Ballarat in 1773, The bakery
was maintained, and the land was not a great success. Problems
developed with the Lands Department due to claims they were absentee
landowners. The farming enterprise finished in the 1880s, when the
leases were transferred. The book finishes with a chaper of personal
family recollections.
