2010 Newcastle Open Report

Sunday AUGUST 15TH, 2010

Kotara Bowling Club, Howell St, Kotara.

28 players arrived at Kotara Bowling Club on Sunday to contest the 2010 Newcastle Open.
For the qualifying rounds, 7 groups of 4 players were drawn to play in Round robins with the seven winners going forward to the 8 person knockout final. The eighth player was to be drawn from the 7 players who finished second in the heats.

Two new players qualified for the Final. Matt Dick was drawn as the lucky second placegetter and ranked 8th while Sean Bermingham qualified ranking 7th.
The other finalists in ranked order were Paul Barnett, Stephen Davy, Bruce Parr (NBC), Shaun Harding (NBC), John Hedge and Mick Dyett (NBC).

Paul Barnett defeated Matt Dick in the first round and Shaun Harding in the semi-final whilst in the second half of the draw, Mick Dyett beat Bruce Parr before squeaking past "newby" Sean Bermingham 9-8 in the semi.

So for the title, in the Blue corner (well, purple actually as he adopted a "lucky" purple pencil to score with all day!) we had Paul "Barney" Barnett and in the Red corner Mick "the Monster" Dyett.

Mick jumped in front 1-0 and the second game looked like being the last as, having taken a 4 cube, Paul was faced with 2 on the bar with only an open 5 point to come in on as Mick worked his men around the board. Gammon seemed the only result and so it proved to be. Only thing was it was Paul who hit the knockout roll of 5-5 and Mick's dice decided to go bye-bye, Barney up 8-1. The Monster rallied in the Crawford for 2-8 followed by a two pointer and a gammoned 2 to claw back to 8-8.
Alas, there the comeback faltered, the dice declaring themselves too pooped to pop anymore and Paul Barnett took out the Final 9-8 in a chanceless 6th game.

Paul won $550 for the win and $150 extra from the Bonus pool which he and Mick decided to split before the final. Mick picked up $190 plus the $150 PLUS another $70 for being the top placed Newcastle Backgammon Club member. Shaun Harding has an extra $30 due to him for being the second highest member.

A $10 field of 16 which was to be a winner take all was split between Jay Deva and Tony Walker. Brian Ramsey took home the raffle prize of wine from First Creek winery.

Warm thanks to all who made the effort to come along to this year's Open and to the Management and staff of the Kotara Club and Robyn's Bistro for use of the amenities and their service on the day.
