Sydney's Ivor Bitel won the 2009 Newcastle Open on Sunday, September
20th, defeating Newcastle player Virginia Jones 9-4 in the final with a backgammon
in the last game.
27 players took part this year with 8 round robins supplying the final 8 for
the knock out series.
Defending champion, Paul Barnett defeated Eva Bitel in the first round, Virginia
accounted for Ben Phillips, Brian Ramsey cruised by Robert Disney and Ivor got
past Australian Open winner Jay Deva.
In the semis, Virginia ended Paul's chances of a back to back double with a
9-0 win and Ivor won 9-4 over Brian.
Ivor collected $500 first prize as well as $320 from the bonus pool, Virginia $210 for 2nd plus $70 for being the leading Newcastle Club Member. Paul and Brian received $50 for losing the semis and Brian also got $30 for being the 2nd best Club player.
Effectively, there were 2 satellites played for the Australian
Open, with the winner being given the option of taking cash or their entry to
the 2009 tournament being paid.
Melbourne's Darren O'Shaughnessy took the cash for his win but Newcastle player
Mick Dyett won entry to the Aus Open.
