From the AGM
It was proposed and accepted at the
2012 AGM that a list of the Club's Life Members be added to the web site as
well as the Club Championship Trophy.
As far as I can recollect there are 3 previous Life Members (Paul Welsh,
Paul Mitchell and Robert Disney) before the acceptance by the Membership of
Tony Walker at the last AGM. I have a sneaking suspicion though that there
may have been one more but from the records I have, which include AGM and
Committee meetings from 1984, I can't even find when Messrs Welsh and
Mitchell were awarded their LMs let alone who the other person could have
been.
To that end, the above mentioned 4 names will be those making up the list at
present.
Anyone that can assist please email me.
Apropos of the above, as received from Tony Walker
Hello All,
Thank you all. I consider in an honour to be voted in as a Life Member.
This will be my 28th consecutive year of playing with the Newcastle Backgammon Club, having started some way into the 1985 season. I think I have missed only 1 competition round in that time.
During that time I have won:-
+ 15 Newcastle Club Championships, (This includes a 14 year
run from 1992-2005 in which I won it 11 times and came 2nd
three times)
+ Pan Pacific Air Vanuatu Tournament 1991
+ Australia V's USA Challenge in Vanuatu 1991
+ Sydney 1993 and 1994
+ Newcastle Open 1993
+ Operation Wheelchairs Tournament 1998
+ East Coast Movers and Shakers Tournament 2007 and 2008
+ South Australian Open Consolation Tournament 2009
+ and was 2nd in Australian Open 1994 (Mick beat me)
I was:-
Club Recorder from 1987 to 1997,
Club President from 1989 to 1991,
Club Captain from 1993 to 2010,
Club Vice Captain 2011.
Kind of feels different not being on the Board after 23
years.
I know everyone on the Board will do a great job in bring
the Club to, and beyond, its 30th anniversary.
I wish everyone luck for the coming season. Have faith I
your abilities, and don't be afraid to venture out and play
in other events. You might surprise yourself.
May the dice be with you :-)
Regards
Tony
The details of the 2012 AGM are available here .
All players are reminded that being available by 7:15 so a
draw can be organised is appreciated. Those who know they will be late
should contact BRUCE PARR on 0439675201 especially in the first 6 meeting
weeks as I will be missing most of them.
It is also asked that players move on in a timely manner from match to
match, without any undue delay, to avoid matches being incomplete at the end
of a night.
Photos from the presentation night held on December 2 are available here . Photos were limited due to nearly everyone's cameras running low on battery !

Round 6 will be on June 10th
2011 Australian Open
The “2011 Australian Open Backgammon Championship” was held at Ryde Ex
Services Club on the weekend of Nov 12/13.
Only 28 players attended cutting the Final field to 64 with buy backs and
halving the advertised prize money.
4 Newcastle players attended, past Open Champ Mick Dyett, Robert Disney,
Tony Walker and Greg Mitchell. Tony and Robert made the final 8 but
unfortunatly Mick and Greg had less successful outings missing the money
rounds.
In the 1/4 Finals Tony went down to Alex Falon 11-8 and I had very
unco-operative dice going down 11-4 to co-organiser Stephen Davy. Ian
Dunstan defeated Simon Woodhead in another of the 1/4s but the 4th was only
just underway when I left between Alan Weinstein and the other tourney
director, Ben Phillips.
Ben beat Alan setting up the semis of Ian Dunstan vs Steve Davy and Alex
Falon vs Ben Phillips.
The Final went to Ian Dunstan over Alex Falon in a 3 setter 9-8, 8-9, 9-6
Having made the 1/4s by 3 pm on Saturday and given the rest
of the day off, I advised those at the touney desk that I was off to the
races for a couple of hours (strange that :-) ). When asked if I had any
tips (no I don't get tips but I do some form, sometimes good, often
ordinary!!) I tipped 3 horses that I knew were 20/1 + that rated well with
me. $31 pop in the 7th went like $31 pops do...terrible after a nice run.
I left the track before the last and dropped back into the club to see who
had qualified after me. The 2 horses in the last were both big prices and as
I wandered down (late) to watch the race, a trio who had followed the
selections were jumping up and down as the horses were crossing the line in
a very close photo. Apparently one of the picks was in the photo and I
looked at the first replay and he looked to have won...a second angle tho
made me less confident. Anyhoo, number goes up...$57+ dividend for our bloke
goes up...cheers all round!!!! The $71 on track that I got was even better!!
:-) The other pick in the race, 20 lengths LAST..lol.
