CONQUEST 2001

FULL THRUST FLEET TOURNAMENT

The Amazing Laser Light Show

"Light streaked through the darkness of space as megaton starships glided silently towards each other, weapons fire reaching out with a kiss that buckled armour and tore crew apart. Fusion and fission missiles leapt forth to their fiery deaths as point defence sought desperately to prevent them contacting the hull. To the untrained observer, it looked no different to an ordinary fireworks display."

A  tournament with 3 games over 2 sessions, using cinematic movement and cm scale (unless we get big tables).

Rules will be FT Fleet Book with the same fleet used for all games.
Fleets will be 1800 points chosen from FTFB1 & 2 (no Sa'Vasku, please).
There must be 6 or more ships in your fleet, maximum of 50% pts can be ships over 120 mass.

Modified Fleet morale will be used; when 50% of your Crew Factors are lost, the fleet retreats.  Each fighter squadron counts as 2 CF. (average of about 30 CF per fleet.)
Bonus points for the scenario are added after the break point is reached.

3 points for a win, 2 for a draw, 1 for a loss.  1 point for fully painted fleet.
Secondary scores will be percentage vs percentage for each game.

Scenarios:

Assassins - 1 ship on each side  is secretly designated as having an admiral on board (written on the back of SSD sheet).  The opponent must then try to destroy this ship.  +10 CF for killing the admiral. +5 for destroying the flagship (largest non-carrier).  +5 points for keeping your own admiral alive.  +20 CF for capturing the admiral in a boarding action.

Escort - Rules for dustclouds are in effect (More Thrust).  Each player receives 2 Fleet Auxiliaries.  +10 CF per transport for exiting off the opposite table edge at V<16.  +5 CF per enemy transport destroyed. +15 CF per transport for capturing by boarding.

Ambush - Each player secretly chooses up to 360 pts of ships (minimum 2 ships) to keep off the board.  On turn 3, these ships enter from a random point on a random table edge at a velocity of 3d6.  1-2: Left edge, 3-4: Entry edge, 5-6: Right edge.
Asteroids will be in use for this scenario (if I put together enough to bring).

Boarding rules: Each crew factor counts as 1 boarding party.  Combat is resolved in 1 turn using fighter combat rules.  (ie: 1 dice per bp; 4-5 = 1 kill, 6 = 2 kills + reroll.)

The results for the Full Thrust 2001 Conquest tournament (cm scale on 6'x5' tables) were as follows:

1. Neil Todd - NSL
2. Matthew Dobbs - FSE (defending champion)
3. Andrew Godde - NSL
4. Tarquin Murnane - FSE
5. ??? - Phalon
Gumby. Me - Kra'vak

There were some very close battles in all scenarios.
First round saw NSL vs NSL, FSE vs FSE & Phalon vs KV in "Assassins" (enemy admiral +10, enemy flagship +5, own admiral +5)
NSL & FSE battles were both fairly even, but the KV vs Phalon was a whitewash. From a starting v:24, the Phalons got up to v:55 & the KV got to v:30, and I spent 2 hours chasing them around the table! That was a 34 CF:1 CF slaughter in favour of the KV.

Second round saw NSL vs FSE, FSE vs KV & NSL vs Phalon in "Convoy" (dustcloud, 2 transports, +5 for each surviving, +5 for each enemy transport killed)
Again fairly even, with only Neil scoring the maximum +20 points for the round. The Phalon again got badly wasted although did manage to gut several heavy NSL ships with Plasmabolts. One of Tarquin's ships (a Ypres? using a Micromachine Nebulon-B) lost life support & then procceded to destroy three enemy ships with SML & beam fire before having every ship in the fleet target it (4/5 of the crew made it to escape pods).

Unfortunately at this point, the Phalon player cracked it and went home for various reasons. In previous discussion he had mentioned he'd number crunched and playtested with his local group, but both Andrew & I both knew how to deal with Phalons. Against inexperienced players, his fleet may have worked.

The finals saw 2 NSL vs FSE battles in "Ambush".
Neil vs Matthew was fairly even until the end, with one FSE SML attack scoring 51 pts against the NSL Von Teggetthoff.
The second final was more interesting with Andrew & Tarquin playing off. The ambush saw all extra ships turn up on the same table edge at point blank range (ramming range in cm scale)! Again the Nebulon-B gutted an enemy destroyer, before turning it's attention to a cruiser with SMLs & gutting another frigate with beam fire. It destroyed another ship before the entire surviving NSL battleline spent 2 turns making sure the crew wasn't getting home to acquire another ship.
Several ships had a bad time of it, loosing powercore and bridge to double thresholds.
