CANDLEMAKING: The Basics

Candle paint ° Double boiler or a dipping can (a deep saucepan or any deep, cylindrical metal container) ° Dyes in concentrated blocks or powder form ° Ice-cream sticks ° Nylon stocking ° Oven glove ° Paintbrushes ° Paraffin wax blocks or beeswax sheets ° Purchased or recycled moulds (eg margarine and yoghurt containers) ° Putty adhesive or mould sealer ° Scents, wax perfumes or essential oils ° Sharp knife, spoon, skewer, cuticle scissors ° Small measuring jug ° Stearic acid (this makes the candle more solid and allows easy removal from the mould) ° Thermometer (this must be very accurate to measure the correct temperature for pouring) ° Wicking, natural or bleached (purchased in metre-long lengths) ° Wooden dowel or ruler.
