Although scientific evidence is increasing, much of the knowledge contained in these pages is based on traditional and empirical experience and is presented for educational purposes only. The recipes are not intended as a substitute for professional medical care and their application is undertaken at the reader's sole discretion and risk.

Although most herbs are intrinsically quite safe they should be treated with respect - do not exceed stated doses or continue with home remedies if conditions are persistent, are worsening or if the true diagnosis is in doubt.

If taking medication for a particular complaint always consult your doctor or another professional medical practitioner before changing or discontinuing dosages. Some herbs will interact with orthodox drugs and care is needed. If on prescribed medication consult a professional before attempting home remedies.

In any acute condition - fevers, coughs, digestive upsets, severe headaches - seek professional help if there is no improvement within a few days or if the condition appears to be worsening.

Give children a fraction of an adult dose depending on age.

In the elderly, metabolism gradually slows down: reduce standard adult doses with increasing frailty and loss of bodyweight.

Essential oils are extremely potent and many can irritate mucous membranes. Unless otherwise clearly stated in remedies,
do not take essential oils internally without professional medical supervision. Before using externally, dilute essential oils in a carrier oil such as wheatgerm, almond or sunflower. Because essential oils are so expensive, many synthetic chemical substitutes are offered for sale. Always buy a reputable brand, guaranteed to be pure and unadulterated; do not be misled by low-cost products.
