DEVISE A STRESS SIGNAL

Once you recognise the symptoms, you can overcome rising tension by concentrating on becoming calm. Establish a warning sign for yourself -- such as when your speech speeds up, or your breathing becomes shallow -- as a signal that it's time to slow down.

GO ON A CALM DIET

If you want to feel calm, eat more raw fruit and vegetables, yoghurt, milk, eggs, wholegrains, beans, nuts and seeds.

TURN TO BLUE, PINK OR GREEN

Each of these colours has the magical ability to instil calm in a troubled mind.

When you pretend you are calm, and adopt the characteristics of a calm person, you'll convince yourself you're calm in no time.

SHRUG…

Recognise the things you can't do anything about, and consign them to the past. Then you can be calm about the present.

SUBMIT YOUR WHOLE BODY…

From time to time, treat yourself to a full-body massage. You'll find it so pleasant, you might overlook the fact that it helps you maintain a state of calm.

GET PHYSICAL

Physical exertion counters the negative effects of stress and helps you to feel good about yourself. Exercise for your head's sake as well as your body's.

LISTEN TO YOURSELF

Speak these words to yourself, quietly but persuasively, as if you were trying to convince somebody else: "I am feeling calm." Say it slowly; hear yourself saying it, and you'll begin to feel calm.

Immerse in the moment…
When you know how to live entirely in the moment, you know how to become calm. Concentrate on everything you do -- doing it to the best of your ability -- and you can work your way to becoming calm and fulfilled.

Work at establishing order where you work and live.

Disorganisation is stressful - and constantly reminds you of all that remains to be done.

Practise Politeness
Practise politeness, not for the benefit of others, but for the ennoblement of yourself. It doesn't matter if the receivers reciprocate (which they usually will) or not -- you will feel better for your niceness.

People who garden know a natural way to relax.
Grow things of your own and experience this yourself.

Visit a Wastepaper Bin
By shedding the information non-essentials of life, you remove the stresses and frustrations of having loose ends.

See the wonder in all you do…

There is little doubt that those who get the most from life are those who look for the wonder in even the smallest things they do. Cultivate this skill and you'll find peace and satisfaction as well.

Look for the bright side
Sometimes it takes a little extra effort to be positive and optimistic, but any time you spend in this pursuit pays off - over and over again.

SET THE PACE

Just as a group attitude or mood can influence the individual, a determined individual can influence the group. By moving slowly, speaking calmly, you can spread a feeling of calm within a group.

Plan a Variation
Many stress problems are habitual. Plan a departure from your routine, taking on a new activity -- several times a day -- and you'll be on the course to calm.
